Music Business BM

As a Music Business major, you will prepare for successful professional careers in the music business industry.

Music business聽major Sophia Cavalcante knew she only had one shot with the email, so it had to be perfect.聽

As president of , 51视频鈥檚 student-run record label, Cavalcante wanted to propose a cross-promotion with iHeartRadio: If the streaming service could donate two tickets to its popular Jingle Ball concert in Boston, SevenSix would raffle them off at its acoustic Winter Jam concert at the Moloney Performing Arts Center, thereby promoting the service to students.

鈥淚 would never have known how to send an email like that,鈥 says Cavalcante, who worked with the club鈥檚 advisor, adjunct faculty member Brad Davidson, on crafting a message that proved successful.

For Cavalcante, who plans to work in the music industry managing recording artists, that鈥檚 just one of the ways she鈥檚 gained practical, hands-on experience at 51视频.聽

鈥淚t really is who you know and how much you put yourself out there,鈥 says Cavalcante, a first-generation college student from Everett, Massachusetts. 鈥淲hat are you doing to put in the work and make your name known?鈥

Under Cavalcante鈥檚 leadership, the focus of SevenSix has shifted from recording music to emulating what it鈥檚 like to work in the music industry. It hosts industry nights with executives and musicians, and it organizes events on campus such as 76 Fest and the Winter Jam.

鈥淲hen an event goes off exactly the way you envisioned it, it鈥檚 such an 鈥業 just did that moment,鈥欌 she says.

Cavalcante began singing and playing drums and piano as a tween. While she enjoyed performing, she enrolled at UML as a business major. When she learned about the music business major in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, she realized 鈥渢his is meant for me.鈥

One requirement of the program is participating in a performance ensemble each semester. As a member of the blues ensemble, Cavalcante has sung on stage at Warp & Weft in downtown Lowell.

鈥淚t鈥檚 fun to be out there performing for people, especially for someone like me who has stage fright,鈥 she says.

Cavalcante, who juggles three part-time jobs with her studies, is spending the spring semester of her senior year as an intern at Entertainment Specialists in Boston. She will manage artists for the company鈥檚 summer concert series.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot, but it prepares me well for the future,鈥 she says. 鈥淲hen I get a job, that鈥檚 all it鈥檚 going to be.鈥

Advice to students

Sophia Cavalcante.
鈥淭ake one day at a time and know that you're going to be OK. Sometimes you think, 鈥榃hat am I going to do?鈥 or 鈥業 can't make it through this right now,鈥 but if you just tackle one thing at a time, it will play out the way it's supposed to happen.鈥
