The mission of the First Year Writing Program at 51视频 is to help students develop and strengthen skills in expository writing, researched writing, and critical thinking. These are all skills they will use in their college career and beyond. The courses we offer enable students to draw on their written communication and critical thinking skills as they broaden their experiences as members of an intellectual community.

The College Writing sequence provides students with the tools they need to navigate a variety of writing situations, and our small class sizes allow students ample one-on-one time with professors. Our classrooms are workshop spaces in which students are challenged every day to improve their writing. Our faculty are committed to helping students develop themselves as thinkers and professionals.

The First Year Writing Program offers programming to promote student engagement in the academic and social communities on campus. We also partner with The Writing Center, the English Department, and the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences to co-sponsor writing workshops, visits by guest speakers and authors, and a variety of writing opportunities. In the fall and spring semesters, we hold essay contests to celebrate great student writing. Additionally, our faculty mentor students presenting research for the annual student research symposium.

The 51视频 custom edition of A Writer鈥檚 Reference, 8th edition by Diana Hacker and Nancy Sommers is the required text for all students in College Writing. Our faculty wrote the front index material which provides students with a quick reference directory of on campus resources and provides helpful tips that foster student success in college.
