Federal Teach Grant

The University of Massachusetts Lowell participates in the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program.

The TEACH Grant is a federal grant that provides up to $4,000 per year to graduate and undergraduate students who agree to teach for four years at an elementary or secondary school, or at an educational service agency that serves students from low-income families. Other requirements must also be met. If the service obligation is not met, the grant is converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Complete a , although you do not have to demonstrate financial need to be eligible
  • Meet the .
  • Meet certain academic achievement requirements (generally, scoring above the 75th percentile on one or more portions of a college admissions test or maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.250). For specific information about the academic requirements, contact the financial aid office.
  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in a TEACH Grant eligible program
  • Complete that explains the terms and conditions of the TEACH Grant service obligation. You must complete counseling each year that you receive a TEACH Grant

Important: If you do not meet the eligibility requirements of the TEACH Grant Program, the full amount of the TEACH Grant that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan that you must repay to the U.S. Department of Education with interest accrued from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement.聽Once the grant becomes a loan, it can never change back to a grant.

Exit Counseling

Federal regulations require that students who have received a Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH Grant) complete an upon withdrawing or graduating from their program of study.

The TEACH Grant Exit Counseling session provides information about the terms and conditions of a TEACH Grant service agreement, as well as the rights and responsibilities that apply if your TEACH Grant is converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan.


Massachusetts In-Demand Program

The Massachusetts In-Demand Program was created by the Massachusetts Legislature in the 2024 Fiscal Year Budget to support economic development in the Commonwealth by providing financial assistance to residents who are pursuing programs of study that will help address the Commonwealth鈥檚 workforce needs. The program will provide scholarships to students to encourage enrollment and completion of training and degree programs identified by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development鈥檚 annual reports on labor market conditions, who intend to remain in the Commonwealth to pursue their professional careers.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must declare a major or currently be pursuing a program of study offered and verifiable by the institution that is designated as an in-demand profession by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development
  • Enrolled at least 6 credits per semester
  • Maintain minimum college-level 3.0 GPA annually and Satisfactory Academic Progress in accordance with institutional standards
  • Annually complete the , or the , for consideration of assistance by any designated deadline
  • Must be a legal Massachusetts state resident

Grant Amount

Awards for eligible applicants under this program may vary based on a student鈥檚 enrollment and charges. Maximum of two years (four semesters) for graduate students, with a minimum of six credits per semester required.
